In Haitian Kreyol, tuberculosis (TB) is the disease of the little house - a Ti Kay. TB strikes those in little houses and those in need after the quake, while quarantining others in little houses, away from their families. Ti Kay's work began in 2010 when a group of Haitian nurses and our Executive Director, Dr. Megan Coffee, specializing in infectious disease, began providing hospital care for TB patients after the earthquake. From 2010 to 2014, Ti Kay, a US nonprofit (501c3), supported a critical care inpatient unit and outpatient clinic for TB and HIV, serving over 4,000 patients. Work, conducted almost entirely by Haitian workers, focused on those who needed oxygen or intensive care they couldn't find elsewhere or who had difficulty adhering to medications. Volunteers act as support to the Haitian workers by training Haitians in clinical skills and by providing project management and accounting from the U.S. In addition, volunteer nurses in the U.S. conduct telemedicine in collaboration with Haitian workers who visit the patients. In 2014, the hospital in which the unit was located began post-earthquake reconstruction and the unit was closed. The unit is working to reopen and fill the unmet needs of those critically ill with TB. Since 2014, Ti Kay continues to help those at home affected by TB or HIV, ensuring they have the support they need to succeed.
