Safe Surgery

Safe surgery helps save lives, relieves disability, and prevents death from neglected common conditions. However, 5 billion people worldwide, most of whom live in resource-poor settings, cannot access safe, affordable surgery and anesthesia care when needed. A large number of anesthesia providers in low-resource settings lack sufficient equipment and training to monitor blood oxygen levels through pulse oximetry.

Americares is committed to advancing safe surgical care. Through our Safe Surgery Initiative, we will donate pulse oximeters, surgical instrument sets and surgical safety checklists to qualified recipients.

Pulse Oximeters

Criteria

We will donate units and probes to be left with your in-country partner, if you:

  • Have assessed oximetry needs in the OR and recovery area of your partner facility.
  • Can provide training on their use in addition to your patient care responsibilities.
  • Can provide an in-country contact at the facility accepting responsibility for the units.

We also ask that you be willing to provide feedback in the future on how to most effectively implement this initiative.

FAQ for our Pulse Oximeters here.

Surgical Instrument Sets

Criteria

  • Have assessed the instrument set needs of your partner facility.
  • Can confirm that your partner facility staff processes (clean, disinfect, sterilizes) its surgical equipment.
  • Can provide an in-country contact at the facility accepting responsibility for the units.

Surgical Safety Checklist

Laminated checklists are made available to surgical partners through the online application. Also included is a whiteboard marker and velcro for mounting.
